MWC 2008: DoCoMo fitness handset measures halitosis and more

Ashley was introduced to the DoCoMo prototype fitness handset at MWC 2008 today. It's a body-conscious phone which can measure heart rate and body fat or count your steps with an integrated pedometer. But Ashley's favourite option was the halitosis - or bad breath - measure. He might be wishing he'd gone for heart rate...

MWC 2008: Toshiba Portégé G810 is announced

Toshiba's Portégé range has a new handset addition in the form of the G810, a super slim touchscreen designed for business users.

The Windows Mobile 6 handset comes with the full complement on Office Mobile apps, push email and the like, and there's HSDPA and HSUPA support so browsing and downloading ought to be a speedy process.
In other news, there's a 3 megapixel camera, Windows Media Player Mobile and a 65K colour screen for a decent, albeit fairly average, multimedia experience. On top of that are the usual suspects: Bluetooth, WiFi and microSD card slot for memory expansion of up to 4GB.

Key differences

The 1000D is designed to fit into Canon's model range beneath the 450D, which explains much of why the 450D was such a step up from its predecessor, the 400D. In many respects, the 1000D is still a step up from that model, with remarkably few compromises made to keep the costs down.

digital cameras ...Canon EOS 1000D (Rebel XS / Kiss F) Review

When Canon launched the EOS 300D back in 2003 it was widely regarded as the first affordable digital SLR and secured Canon a seemingly indomitable number-one spot in the market. Since then the 'small' Canon has gone through three further iterations and the current model - the EOS 450D - offers a feature set and image quality that could only have been dreamed about five years ago (and at a price point well below the 300D's). However, the competition haven't been idle spectators and have recently launched a number of de-spec'ed cameras that have redefined the entry level segment and undercut the EOS 450D in the DSLR hierarchy.
.

anon has now responded to this mounting pressure by launching a new model one tier below the 450D in its current lineup - the EOS 1000D. It shares bits and pieces with Rebels gone by and, depending from which angle you look at it, the new model is either a stripped down 450D or a 'reheated' 400D. It's a lower specification camera than the

what is Benefits of a Plasma TV

Summary

If you are looking to replace your old TV with a Plasma, then you are definitely on the road to the ultimate in home entertainment. The advent of these slim wall-mountable TVs make the conventional CRT models a thing of the past. With some many offers out there and new manufacturers joining the fray all the time, the poor consumer is often left bewildered and in need of a little impartial advice.

Benefits of a Plasma TV

Plasma TVs are sleek and come in space-saving designs with screen sizes ranging from 32 to 63. They offer higher resolution than most conventional TV sets and many can display HDTV and DTV signals as well as the XGA, SVGA and VGA signals from a computer. Plasma screens produce no scan lines, as every pixel has its own transistor electrode producing smooth images across the screen. Some Plasma sets have in-built line doubling to improve the quality of images. The exceptional colour accuracy of Plasma is proven with its display of life like images. Plasma TVs have a widescreen ratio of 16:9 and viewing angle of 160 degrees. The 100HZ refresh rates are ground breaking in the new models in comparison to traditional CRT TVs that operate at just 50HZ.

Plasma TVs can also function as a computer monitor and the provision of digital and analogue inputs allow them to connect to just about any device. One major benefit of Plasma TV technology is its flexibility in mounting and installation. With a dept of some 3-4 inches, it can be fitted on flat wall mounts, tilting wall mounts or simply sit on an elegant stand or hi-fi unit. Many of todays models are offered with an option unit for just this purpose.

Things to Watch Out For

You should be aware that there was an issue with some older models producing excessive fan noise. The latest models, however, have more efficient panels that emit less heat and require less cooling. Some earlier models were also prone to screen burn where constant use could fatigue the screen. If you are offered an apparently attractive deal at a really silly price, it could be that the model in question may have one or more of these issues.

Built-in Audio Options

Some manufacturers offer optional speakers that can be attached to the side of the unit, while others offer in-built speakers. You always have the option of choosing your own satellite speakers hooked into an external amplifier component. The

Web 2.0 is a Big Deal

From the time the internet started it has been touted as the one of the greatest inventions all times. What started off as a network of machines has grown into a phenomenon and continues to do so at the speed of thought.

The web which started off serving customers with purely static pages has been continuously moving to a more dynamic and interactive environment. The recent transition has been in moving from awebsite owner driven web to a user driven one. More and more power is being given to the user to drive things the way he/she wants on the web.

The current wave which we are witnessing although not intentional has been aptly called Web 2.0.

Web 2.0 is the name given to the array of new age websites which are popping up that are more focussed on bringing people together to one place and allowing them to them to share, discuss, post, vote, form communities etc. basically be able to express themselves on the web like they have never been able to do so before.

If you have to go by definitions, Wikipedia one of the leading new age Web 2.0 site defines the term Web 2.0 as:

Web 2.0, a phrase coined by O'Reilly Media in 2004, refers to a supposed second-generation of Internet-based services such as social networking sites, wikis, communication tools, and folksonomies that let people collaborate and share information online in previously unavailable ways. O'Reilly Media, in collaboration with MediaLive International, used the phrase as a title for a series of conferences and since then it has become a popular (though ill-defined and often criticized) buzzword amongst certain technical and marketing communities.

Well, then again Web 2.0 might mean different things to different people. Most of the dedicated techies can be heard saying a plain social networking site alone is not good enough, it has to support AJAX as well for it to qualify to be a Web 2.0 site. Although AJAX was a starting point of the newer web sites, I think the social networking and collaboration bit is the key differentiator.

Although OReilly coined the term Web 2.0, the intention was not to suggest a newer version of the webinstead this term was formed to be a part of the core attractive punch-line to be used in of one of the conferences they were going to organize about the web.

Lets talk about some of the Web 2.0 sites thats changing the way we use the web right now. This would ideally give a better understanding of whats being done on the web in the Web2.0 paradigm.

Web 2.0 top sites

Wikipedia.com Wikipedia is a web based encyclopedia which is free. Well the surprising part is not that it is free. It can be edited by anyone not necessarily a registered user, which means absolutely anyone. Please try it.

This really epitomizes the beauty of the web. With multiple users editing this site all the time, it only makes us wonder how on earth does this site provide accurate information. Its just like life, the good over evil theory. Works on the web too. There are the good people working tirelessly towards making sure content on Wikipedia is latest and accurate. So even if you enter the wrong data, in some time or worst case in a couple of days you will see the information corrected. The magic of user driven content.

The concept of wikipedia has become so popular that the term wiki is now used to refer to any website the visitors can edit the content of the site.

digg.com This is one of my personal favourites. Just a site which allows you to pull news from anywhere on the web and the digg community can vote for the news posted. The greater the number of posts the higher the chances of it getting listed on the front page of digg.com. Simple, concise to-the-point and well thought out site. But I still cant relate the site design to the traffic digg has managed to generate. Digg.com has millions of viewers.
youtube.com Iam quite sure by now everyone has heard about this one. Basically a video sharing website where users can upload videos, view other videos and share videos with other users. Just started in Feb 2005 has managed to create such a huge user base that Google has decided to buy them out for $1.6 billion
flickr.com What youtube is to videos, flickr is to photos. By the way this is now a Yahoo company.
myspace.com This is a social networking site where you can create your own space, add friends, share music, videos, photos etc. You can post personal profiles and also blog using myspace. They claim to have 106 million accounts. In July 2005 Rupert Murdochs News Corporation bought out myspace.com for $580 million.
del.icio.us A social bookmarking site which organizes content based on user defined tags. Once registered a user can bookmark any site and tag and share bookmarks with the del.icio.us user community.

New Web 2.0 terms

Wiki A term given to any website which allows users to directly edit the content of the website and in some cases sometimes without even being a registered user.

Voting digg.com gave a new meaning to this word in the Web2.0 world. These days users can vote to show their like or dislike for a specific content on a website. It is an important way for a user to exercise his views on the web.

Tagging Users can now submit a posting and associate tags or keywords with them. Users can define their own tags. Other users who search for a tag and find all relevant postings with that specific tag. Again a user driven way of labelling and searching. This is basically metadata. If the author wants to reclassify the page at a later time, this can easily be done by changing the list of tags.

This process is also referred to as Folksonomy. This concept has been popularised by sites like del.icio.us and technorati.com.

With so many new websites coming up and more and more users flocking to them basking in the new found freedom and power to throw their views, this looks like only the beginning of the very many innovative ways in which users are going to play a bigger role in developing the future of the web.

?What is Information Technology

Many definitions are expressed about IT. All of them are correct regardless of the differences among these definitions. The reason is that these definitions are coming from separate perspectives. We will review each bellow:
IT is a Strategy: Every organization along its life time is trying to reach its ideal goals. Therefore, organizations need to know their tools, resources, facilities, and their environment, well. By applying IT, organizations can achieve a recognition that is different by the recognition of traditional companies. Organizations can use this

Latest Gadgets in Technology

Today you are invited to discover or recall the latest gadgets in technology, which marked our personal entertainment experience and work productivity during last year. They are all complex devices capable to perform intensive tasks, but coming in simple designs with user-friendly interfaces.

If we start with the communication sector, first gadget we will think of is, of course, the popular
iPhone 3G, Apple’s latest release, which is the world’s first and onlymulti-touchscreen cell phone available for customers worldwide. This innovative technology introduced by Microsoft’s Surface table, allows you to control applications on your phone using your fingers for typing on the on-screen keyboard, glide through albums, scroll through pictures, and zoom web pages, all by touching the multi-touch display layer placed on a capacitive panel in charge with detecting your pressing via electrical fields. Your touch is then sent to the LCD screen under this layer, processed by special software, and interpreted as flicks, taps and pinches.

The on-screen keyboard is different than what you are used with. It adapts its keys and layout for different applications and 21 languages, according to the current mode.

Nokia S60 N97 mini,wonderful and Attractive

How does the iPhone compare to sibling site NokiaExperts.com’s two platforms, trusty Symbian S60 OS as seen in the N97 mini and the next generation Maemo OS of the N900? That’s the question I’m looking to answer in TiPb’s first week of the 3rd annual Smartphone Round Robin

I’ll confess from the start that I wasn’t terribly familiar with Nokia’s platforms coming into this review. They dominate the rest of the world, of course, but for a variety of reasons they haven’t made much of a dent here in North America yet. Lucky for me, the SPE network has reached across the pond to Seattle (hey, there must be ponds between Montreal and Seattle!) to bring Matthew Miller to the table this year. His tremendous knowledge and enthusiasm — along with the incredible help I received from the NokiaExperts community — are the only reason this review was able to happen. So to him and to them; thanks.

(Speaking of the NokiaExperts community, remember you can still jump on that thread and each day you reply, you’re entered to win your choice of Nokia smartphones, including the two reviewed below!)
Now let’s get it on… after the break!

Hardware Design

Nokia is often — and rightly — praised for their hardware. Heck, any company that can make stainless steel smartphones and still get great radio reception knows the

Strange Things and the wonders of technology covers up to sewers

Western scientists managed to reach a new way to utilize the rainwater gutters and covers at the same time! And went out to the world a new invention to achieve both purposes at the same time.

The new invention, which bears the signature of Western progress in each area is a cover for septic tanks equipped with screen show people the closest place to wait for buses and provide them with information on street names and directions.

And draws the cover of each sink capacity of rain water falling upon entering the waters where certain of the slots on the lid and move the drain water down a small fan cover energy generation, which can display the data on the small screen on the cover of all septic tanks.

And septic tanks for each button and Ayman al-button easily, and once passing in the street pushing a button on the right shows the sink him with information and trends from the streets, and if push button drain the left guide him to the nearest place to wait for the bus and how to approach them. - Strange Wonders

panasonic NVGS 230

Three CCDs used to be the hallmark of professional-grade camcorders. But in 2003 Panasonic started to bring the technology down to models well under a grand. Now, amazingly, you can pick up a Panasonic camcorder with a trio of sensors for under £250 - well into bargain basement territory. The NV-GS230 is a MiniDV model, so is almost yesterday's technology. But if you're still resisting the urge to move up to high definition, or just don't want to spend that much on a camcorder, MiniDV remains a value choice.

Although the NV-GS230 incorporates three CCDs, they are rather small, which will have an impact on low-light performance. Each one is 1/6in and has a gross complement of 800,000 pixels. Panasonic aggregates these together for still images, allowing the NV-GS230 to boast 2.3-megapixels, which provides 1,760 x 1,320-resolution photos. An SD memory card slot is built in for storage.
